Hi. I finalised an exchange yesterday (four days, early April) only to find within a couple of hours that due to family circumstances we wouldn’t be able to make it. I apologised and cancelled, explaining the situation. The host seemed to understand, but seems to have kept the nearly 1,000 GPs! This seems to me completely out of order. We’re quite new to HE but have acted in good faith throughout. What can I expect and what should I do? Richard
Host aren’t obliged to return points but of course there are always exceptional situations. I’d advise you to contact member service through the form on the site and explain the situation to them.
Sorry it happened to you Richariata.
Personally i always give the points back.
The red line is that it does not create a problem for me such as to cancel on a very short notice and have no possibility to reorganise.
If you told your host a few hours or a few days after concluding the exchange and the trip is planned in a rather long time, it seems not nice to me even if in the HE rules nothing can oblige a host to refund.
Normally the community is nice and comprehensive.
It happened to me twice.
Once i cancelled by mistake and once my guest could not come.
In both cases, HE had been wonderfully supportive.
