Switzerland questions! Train travel over Christmas break

Hello!

My husband and I live in Barcelona with our 12 and 8 year old boys. The kids miss snow so much (we’re from the USA) and I have been looking for a good place to travel where we can see snow that can be reached by train from Barcelona, for a week sometime between the last week of December / first week of January.

We have never been to Switzerland and it looks like there are really beautiful options for train travel. Is there anyone here who can share your experience, knowledge, advice? Most likely we would do the train to Geneva and go from there. Is there a must see route? A town we should stay in to be in the snow that time of year that we could get to by train?

I’m sure it is hard to get an exchange in such a place but would like to give it a go. My kids would be over the moon

Thank you so much for your help.

Hi Sarah

We have a very famous train that’s called “Glacier Express”. It runs from Zermatt to St. Moritz. It runs over countless bridges and viaducts and goes through many tunnels. You can see lots of peaks from the window.
When you arrive in Geneva, you would need to take a train to brig and from there take the Glacier Express. It departs Brig at 10.18 and arrives in St. Moritz at 16.37 (these are the times of Winter 23/24, check again! If you are interested in how to book and what the cheapest options are just ask.
The place you end up in is St. Moritz, a very fancy place in the Swiss Alps. St. Moritz is in the Engadin Valley, a valley very high up in the mountains where there is snow in the valley in most winters and the lakes are frozen. There are countless cable cars to go skiing. Any place in the Engadin valley would be good to stay in. But this is absolutely high season, finding an exchange won’t be easy. As an alternative maybe you could consider staying at the youth hostel in St. Moritz.
