[NEW] - October 2024: You can now block dates on your calendar!

Iā€™m so happy to share that you can now mark certain dates as unavailable on your calendar!

This was one of the features most requested by HomeExchangers and for years, weā€™ve been hearing and collecting your feebdback and my colleagues on the Product team have decided, after analyzing your requests and comments, as well as the relevance of the feature, to work on it!

How does it work?

My colleague @Benjamin.HomeExchange from the Product team, explains everything in detail below:

Up till now, you could mark your calendar in 3 different ways:

  • dates available for any type of exchange (in green)
  • dates available for a reciprocal exchange (in yellow)
  • dates available for non-reciprocal exchange, with GuestPoints (in blue)

A fourth option is now available:

  • dates when, for one reason or another, your home will be unavailable (gray).

Another little update: to make the calendar clearer, you can now find a clearer legend explaining what each color represents.

The result: dates marked as unavailable will appear as gray on the calendar, like when an exchange is already finalized.

When you contact a member to request an exchange, the periods marked as unavailable will appear in gray on the calendar, and you will not be able to propose an exchange on these dates.

A clearer available or unavailable calendar

You already have the option to choose whether or not youā€™d like to be contacted outside the dates marked as available on your calendar (simply choose the desired option under your calendar).

To make things even clearer, from now on, this choice will be illustrated on the calendar, since if you have chosen not to be contacted outside your available dates, these dates will now appear in gray.

And there you have it! I hope everythingā€™s clear and that you like this update that Benjamin, our Product team and developers have been working hard on

Hi, We have done over 100 exchanges and will keep goingā€¦butā€¦
First, I was very happy with this new function as I do need it to block dates when I lend my house to my adult children or friends for example, on precise dates that I might be able to forget otherwiseā€¦

I had been asking for this for a long time.

But as I live in a highly requested place in Portugal with a pool, I thought I could keep the function of blocking the dates not available on my calendar too.

UNFORUNATELY, this is not possible, why?

Now if I block 1 week for example in orange. All the white zones become available, but they are not as we live in this house!

I tried to explain this on the French fb group but few people seemed to get it, do you or does Benjamim ?

Now, it all happens again, people are asking me on white dates which I cannot block anymoreā€¦

And if I used the old function of blocking the white zones, I cannot block the precise dates in orange when we or our family/friends stay here, so very disappointing in the end.

Why not being able to have both???

When I blocked my calendar, people used fake datesā€¦but if they are red or orange they will visualise that our house is occupied!

So do I need to color it all in orange? The calendar then looks very confusing to me indeedā€¦

I need both functions     PLEASE.
Or I will be annoyed but have to send automatic NO answers all the timeā€¦

Thank you for answering me , please.
Kind regards,
Laura

Just to finish about this, what we need is just that members can only contact us on yellow, green or blue zones.
This means the 2 functions indeed
Laura

Thatā€™s great with the new option to block the calendar. Is there any chance that there will be a synchronising option with other calendars in future?

Hi Laura! Iā€™m sorry for getting back to you only now! Iā€™m sharing your feedback (along with everyone elseā€™s) to the team as I can understand how that can be frustratingā€¦

When the team had worked on this, they had in mind these two scenarios:

  • a member who was open to receiving requests but have certain no-go dates because they already have friends or family coming to stay or because they have commitments and have to stay home. In this case, this new feature allows them to be uncontactable during these dates
  • the other case would be a member who is generally unavailable except for certain periods for example families who have children in school who arenā€™t available for most of the year except for school holidays. In this case, they wouldnā€™t need to indicate unavailable dates, theyā€™d just need to mark their available dates and then choose the option to only be contacted for their available dates

I think in your case, it seems like the second option would work better for you as it seems like you would like to be contacted only for several dates when your home can be available (since you live in the home) right?

Hi Mali! Iā€™m sorry Iā€™m getting back to you only now. We donā€™t have this on the roadmap at the moment but I know that itā€™s a feedback weā€™ve noted on our end

Hi Zann,
No, indeed , I do need both optionsā€¦I am in transfer in Dubai and got another wrong request while I wrote in my title : ONLY AVAILABLE ON YELLOW,GREEN OR BLUE PERIODSā€¦And got another request on white periods which I DO NEED TO BLOCK ā€¦PLEASE HELP !
If I choose the blocking option I cannot put the busy periods in orangeā€¦
So annoying, I keep sending automatic No which I do not likeā€¦
Hoping ypu can help having both options soon.
Kind regards
Laura

But was is the point of blocking specific dates instead of blocking your whole calendar (white dates)? Iā€™m sorry, I donā€™t get it.

Because I know in advance when friends or family is coming so I could block the datesā€¦if white, one can forget.
Anyway, it seems you are not getting my point which is sad indeed.
Simple wish shared by other homeexchangers on fb :
Be able to have both options,
Will it be possible or not?
This sounds desperateā€¦
-Laura

Thanks Laura for further elaborating on your experience! I know that many others have also had the request to keep both options so Iā€™m sharing it with the team

Lately I have used " reverse " search whereby I list my location and the algorithm
searchs for folks wanting to visit my city. This has resulted in calenders completely grayed out and saying " free of any dates " ! Is this because I specified certain arrival and departure dates ?
