🆕 New for your searches: smarter location filters

Hi HomeExchangers,

You’ve told us time and time again—finding the perfect home by the water or right by the slopes can really matter. So to make things easier, we’re launching Phase 1 of a project to improve our “environment tags.”

What’s changing in practice :round_pushpin:

Until now, these tags were self-declared. From now on, we’re using precise geographic data to automatically enhance three key categories: Seaside, Mountain, and Lake.

The result? Much more relevant results when you use these filters in your searches!

How does it work? :straight_ruler:

Thanks to your feedback (a big thank you to the 410 of you who answered our February survey!), along with data analysis, we’ve set automatic distance ranges adapted to different regions:

  • Seaside: 5 km (dense areas) / 10 km (other areas)

  • Mountain & Lake: 10 km (dense areas) / 15–20 km (other areas)

What’s next? :rocket:

This project may roll out in three phases, depending on how much you use these new filters—so the more you use them, the further we’ll go!

  1. Phase 1 (now): Improving existing tags using geographic data

  2. Phase 2 (if Phase 1 is successful): New tags like Beach, Ski, Historic Centre, or Public Transport

  3. Phase 3 (if Phase 2 is successful): Even greater visibility of these filters in your search experience

:light_bulb: Good to know: if we see strong feedback and lots of usage, the possibilities are almost endless—we could add many more environment tags (fishing spots, surfing areas, museums, farms, and more!) :dizzy:

We can’t wait to hear what you think! Try out these filters for your next trip and let us know if they help you find that perfect home :house::sparkles:

More good news coming soon—stay tuned! :sun:

It’s great to see HE improving the filters, especially for locating ski resorts!

I think calling a property “seaside” when it’s 5–10 km from the beach is misleading. Around 2 km max—walkable—makes more sense. The same goes for the “ski” filter: it should include only properties in the resort, at the foot of the slopes, or by the shuttles.

The map already lets you spot places a bit farther away, so filters should clearly separate true “seaside” or “ski resort” properties from those further out.

If filters aren’t precise and restrictive enough, they lose much of their usefulness. I’ve shared this on the French forum, but I’d love to hear what others think too.
