Are there great opportunities for runners where you are?
Where I live there are numerous 5K, 10K, half and full marathons.
My favorite is the Humboldt Bay Marathon. There’s a half marathon as well, and sometimes a 5K and fun run mile.
It starts in Eureka, California ~ by the Humboldt Bay. Held the second Sunday in August, it is the only event in the Northern Hemisphere that will not be hot in the summer! Temperatures for the marathon have ranged from cool to warm … but never hot (over 22 degrees C).
Best of all, the finisher medals and tee-shirts are works of art. Literally!
There’s an interesting race in our area (southeast of Portugal) that crosses a border, the “X miles of the Guadiana”. It starts in Ayamonte (Spain), and then crosses the Guadiana river over to the town of Vila Real de Santo António (Portugal).
Speaking of crossing bridges, both big bridges in Lisbon are open one day of the year for races!
Bridge “25 of April” (the one that looks like San Francisco’s Golden Gate bridge) hosts Lisbon’s half-marathon. There’s also a 5K race/walk on the same day, for those of us who just want the opportunity to go over the bridge on foot. My grandpa worked on this bridge’s construction decades ago, so it was a magical momento to cross it on foot, paying attention to its details.
And Vasco da Gama bridge, a more recent 17km bridge over the Tejo river, hosts Lisbon’s marathon, with an 8K fun race on the side.
