Hiking recommendations

We love hiking and would like to discover new trails to explore out there! Do you have some recommendations of nice places you’ve hiked recently, maybe on a HomeExchange swap or just in your country? It could be multiple day hikes or perhaps an area that has a lot of nice circular trails to offer.

I’d love to receive some tips about this from the community — maybe they’ll inspire us to exchange in that area in the future!

For hikers interested in Portugal, I recommend the Fisherman’s Trail:

Over 200kms on the southwest tip of the European continent, in a very well marked trail mostly on top of cliffs with amazing views, but also with some sandy bits. We’ve finished it some years ago, and want to go back!

Also in Portugal, but in the Azores islands, you’ll find our highest mountain — a volcano called Pico, in the island of Pico!

Entrance to the trail that goes to the top of the volcano requires registration at the visitor centers, and you’ll have to carry a GPS device with you to the top. This can be a challenging trail, quite steep, with loose volcanic rock that slips under your feet and sign posts that can be tricky to find when the fog rolls in. On a sunny day though, the views are glorious and you can even camp overnight at the top!

Hiking is my and my husband’s favorite past time together, and most of our exchanges have centered around places with amazing hiking! We chose to live where we do (Washington State, USA) because we have access to fabulous hiking trails year-round, from the Olympic National Park and Mt Rainier National Park to forested trails right out of our backyard- our listings are #2472588 (full house) and #2532119 (2 bedroom private bath hospitality stay). Some exchanges we have recently done with great hiking include Steamboat Springs, Colorado, USA and North Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.

In Iceland we have a fabulous trail: Laugavegur. It’s a 3-4 days hike in the highlands of Iceland. It’s really wonderful

USA: the newest and longest trail is The Great Redwood Trail.
It travels through 300 miles of northern California between the coastal communities of San Francisco and Arcata, with an extension to the Annie & Mary Trail in Blue Lake.
The GRT is soon to be complete, but wonderful portions are already.

At the northern end of the GRT lie the California State and National Parks preserving the California Coastal Redwood groves where you can find more long and loop trails than you can imagine!

Your post inspired me to start a thread about places and races to run!

@Jasper that would be amazing! My husband is a runner and he has run races in a few different countries, including the Berlin marathon. There are also a couple of interesting yearly races here in the area, so I can contribute those!

Lots of good places to hike but hiking the superstitions to Flat Iron in Arizona is a good overnight one. Very different from the forest hikes like we did parts of the Appalachian Trail on the east coast.

Oh, that looks so pretty! Most of our hikes are in coastal or forested places — it would be cool to try something more desert-like, someday!
