Long term exchanges : Is it popular?

Long term exchanges

Hello HE,

Would it be possible to know the number of long term exchanges on HE :

More than 1 month and more than 3 month (tourist visa validity) ?

If some people did it, it would be nice to have their feedback.

In the past, I’ve swapped my home several times for an entire month with families from New York and London. I also spent five weeks in Combloux (French Alps) last year, and I’ll be returning for 40 days next January on a GPoints home swap. There’s really no difference compared to shorter swaps — the only thing that changes is the length of the stay and the fact that longer swaps are harder to arrange, since HomeExchange doesn’t offer specific tools to search for them.

You have a group to search for long term, if you don’t know it, it can help

Hi Etienne,

I know there is a group.
Please read carefully the subject.

The subject is HE statistics and feedback.

Not finding an exchange.

Hi illopart

Thank you for your feedback.
I do agree. It’s quite hard to find a longterm exchange as there is no tool.

The tag 14 long term exchange is useless.

So how did you manage?

Did you contact the members exactly as as short term exchange?
Did you use some tags or information in the listing to find people who may be interested in ?

I was answering to the last sentance ā€œHE does not provide any tools to search for long termā€. There’s a tool and a lot of members don’t know it, that’s why I mention it.

The ā€œtoolā€ we have is useless — 14 days is not a long exchange!

@Nathalie1, I just contact people directly, explaining that I’m looking to stay as long as possible. I offer both options — GuestPoints and reciprocal — and let them choose whatever suits them best. I’m also very flexible with dates and open to non-simultaneous reciprocal exchanges if needed.

Before reaching out, I always read the profiles carefully. I’ve found it’s usually easier to get a positive response from older people (retired folks tend to have more flexibility for long stays) or teachers (thanks to their long summer holidays!).

In NYC and London, we’ve always been asked to do reciprocal home swaps. Ski exchanges, on the other hand, have mostly been done using GuestPoints and outside of school holidays — many families rent out their places during the high season. However, they’re sometimes open to swaps from early January to early February, and again from March to mid-April.

But I agree — it’s hard to find these opportunities, as we don’t have the right tools on HE.

Regarding the stats, an exchange from 14 days is considered as long cause the average duration is 7 days. That’s why the staff chose this value. It may seem short for you but two weeks is already long for most members. But I get what you mean, it’s not like a 3 month or something

ā€But I get what you mean, it’s not like a 3 month or somethingā€

We all agree on that point :

ā€œHomeExchange doesn’t offer specific tools to search for them.ā€

Maybe long term exchanges are rare precisely because there is no tool whereas there are retired people and teachers with long holidays and digital nomads.

So let’s go back to the topic = HE statistics and feedback.

Hello Nathalie, I hope it isn’t your intention but I feel that your replies to Etienne reflect a certain amount of passive agressivity. This makes reading this conversation somewhat disagreeable.

The aim of HomeExchange is to find an exchange. What difference will knowing these statistics mean to you? I can understand why you’d want other members’ feedback on their long-term exchange experiences but don’t see how these statistics will help.

Anyway, let’s keep the English forum a positive place to post.

Hi Susan

Statistics allow to know the success or unsuccess to get a long term exchange.

Feedbacks help to know how to be successful knowing that HE tools are helpless to find a long term exchange.

For Etienne, I would be greatful if he could ignore me.

Personal attacks on the (French) forum are inappropiate.

Ā« @Nathalie1 Vous cherchez vraiment la petite bĆŖte pour tout…«

If I’d written that about someone, I’m not sure it would have been accepted.

Maybe HE could create additional categories for swap durations: short swaps (up to 7 days), medium swaps (15 days to 1 month), and long swaps (more than 1 month). Members could then select one, two, or all three of these categories from a dropdown menu, with the option to add a short note to clarify their availability. For example, a family might select the ā€˜long swaps’ option and specify that they are only available during school holidays, or only from May to September 2026, etc. This should be a feature that can be toggled on or off freely, just like the other house amenities.

That would be great Illopart.

And so helpful.

There are also listings with a 30 days minimum set up.

But this set up is not used by the search system.

It seems that HE has enough tools to refine the search results.

The search engine should use this information.

@Etienne was kindly replying to the comment from another member that there aren’t any specific tools on the platform to find a long-term exchange. I think this is a tool that not many members know about - so thank you to him for highlighting this.

Hello Natalie and welcome to the English language Forum. I can see from your conversations here that you have had previous dealings with members on the French Forum. May I suggest that we all start a fresh over here  Please if I could remind everyone of our community guidelines on this forum, to be kind and respectful to others at all times. Thank you, and happy exchanging. I’m afraid I do not know these exact statistics, but I will of course pass on your thoughts with regards to difficulty finding long-term exchanges to our product team.
