Long term exchanges

Hello HE community!

Looking to start a discussion amongst members interested in long term exchanges.

Wondering what other members consider to be a long term exchange? 3 weeks? 3 months?

Have you done an exchange of over a month? How did it go?

I have done back to back exchanges that totaled 10 weeks, but the longest exchange with a single host was for 3 weeks. I’d love to be able to easily find other members who are also looking for longer swaps.

I will have my first long exchange in August: 6 weeks! I am really excited!

However, I find long exchanges hard to find. Do you have any tips that you use? When I search with dates that correspond to, for example, 2 months, it is uncommon that I find a single house!

On our side, being remote workers with children who have left the house, we are very flexible

Hi,

The longest exchange we had was 2 weeks but we were always thinking about an exchange which can take few months. Usually when we discuss an exchange with others we ask about possibility to extend it, but no one was interested so far. Hopefully this will be easier to find someone with the new forum now

I agree - it would be useful to be able to easily identify those looking for longer stays ( I consider that to be anything longer than 2 weeks
) Also a ‘retirement’ forum or tag would be valuable

We always try to find a swap of three weeks weeks in our summer holiday, but we only succeeded once. Once we found an exchange for 16 nights, but most families want to swap for two weeks at the longest.
This forum could be a perfect place for people who want longer swaps to find each other.
My husband and I would certainly be open to longer swaps when our children have left the house, but that will not be for several years.

We would like to do at least 3 months in the US with our house in Paris

Hi,
I just tried to join the Long term groups but the groups page doesn’t seem to be working :S

Yes it’s very hard to find long term exchanges! I for instance would like to exchange my house in Iceland for a house in France for 5-6 months next year.

We are looking to exchange our house in Ireland for somewhere in Canada or the US next summer (2025) I only joined this week but the app needs serious updating as it has less features than the website and lacks the forum. Anyway, hoping we can get something sorted as I think this format has great potentialđŸ€

We are from the Gold Coast in Australia, and we joined Home Exchange as well as another site just for long-term exchanges. We have a two month exchange in Norway coming up in September and another on Vancouver Island, Canada, in March and April 2025. We are hoping to be able to go straight to Europe after Canada to save airline costs.

We started our home exchange journey in mid-2023 and we have just finished our first exchange (two weeks in New Zealand) so we are a perfect example of how important patience is when looking for long-term simultaneous exchanges. We are lucky in that we are retired and are totally flexible as to dates and destinations. We’re just not interested in points.

Long term exchanges can be difficult to nail down. We had advanced discussions with people in France, Portugal and Spain - all 2 to 3 month exchanges - and all three were unable to continue. This is par for the course I think.

But there are those of us out there looking for long-term.

Andrew

Hello from the Dominican Republic,
I would love to do an exchange of at least one month in an English-speaking country to “finally” improve my accent and fluency by forcing myself to communicate with humans rather than artificial intelligences hidden behind a language learning app. I know many of you dream of heat and sun, but I am absolutely not equipped for the cold!! and if I have to stay indoors at your place, it would be pointless.
One question: is a long-term exchange possible when animals live in the house?
Thank you for your response!

We too are wondering about long term. I think of this from about 3months to perhaps even a year. As Australians it is so expensive to get overseas so the idea of being able to manage a long exchange is quite tantalising. We would love to be able to do 3-6 months in one or several homes but it would have to be reciprocal as we simply dont earn enough points for that length of time.

I am also struggling to find longer exchange offering my sublet on Dalmatian coast of Croatia for New York. Anything between few weeks to multiple months would be superb. Additional difficulty is I need accessible entrance (I walk with multiple joint replacements, so no stairs).

I second that! I would love the possibility of being able to sort/categorize homes by ‘long term’ !

Hi Carole,

I wish I did have some good tips. My strategies haven’t produced stellar results. I agree, the date range filter is difficult to use for long term exchanges.

This is what I have been trying:

I look at the reverse search to see who might want to come to my area. I look at their profile to give me any hints that they might be open to a longe term exchange, like being remote workers or retired.

I don’t get my hopes set on a particular city. In a long term exchange, there is time to do overnights and weekend trips. It’s nice to be in places where you’re not consider just another tourist.

I look for homes that will meet my minimum needs; beds for everyone, a wash machine and a kitchen that is practical for cooking. I travel for the experiences that happen outside of the 4 walls I’m staying in. I set my home at zero points for exchanges so that homes with less features than mine, don’t have to worry about a point difference.

I include a car in the exchange. There is no public transportation where I live and rental fees can quickly add up to more than the cost of flights.

Was there anything in particular that helped you secure your 6 week exchange?

: ) Nick

Thank you, Nick!

From my side, I wasn’t picky about the destination and sent out several messages. I came across a couple who, like us, were open to new places that weren’t necessarily on their official list of preferred destinations. I think I just reached out to the right person at the right time

I also check the profile. Often, if they have school-aged children, I don’t bother if I’m not looking during regular school vacations. I look for retired people or remote workers.

Hello! Talking about long-term exchange, we are looking for a 1 school year exchange! Kind of a life exchange for a year! Did anybody do that before?
We live in Vancouver, Canada in a 3 bedroom unit. Our destination for August 2025 is Valencia, Spain but we are open for a close to Valencia location as well. If you are a family looking for an adventure in this beautiful side of the world and have a home for us in Spain, please, contact us! We would like to exchange from mi-august 2025 until mi-august 2026 (or earlier).
