Before you leave
- Make a checklist for things like mail, bills, visas, and other admin
- Arrange for a trusted friend or neighbour to be available if needed while you’re away
- Stay in close contact with your exchange partner so you’re both clear on all the details

Here’s a summary of the community’s top tips for anyone planning a long-term exchange ![]()
What type of exchange works best?
Many members recommend using GuestPoints, as they make it much easier to string together multiple stays without needing matching dates. Reciprocal exchanges—whether simultaneous or non-simultaneous—also work well if you’re flexible. Lots of members use a combination of both, depending on the opportunities available.
Build up your GuestPoints
Several members suggest saving a healthy balance of GuestPoints before you leave by hosting guests or offering hospitality. Some recommend aiming for 10,000–15,000 GuestPoints. An extra tip: if your home remains available while you’re travelling, you can continue earning GuestPoints along the way.
Planning your itinerary
- Start looking at least 6 months in advance to give yourself more choice
- For a 3-month trip, expect around 20 exchanges, with stays ranging from 4–5 days to 2 weeks
- Many members find that 1–3 weeks per stay is the ideal balance—long enough to settle in without feeling rushed
- Send plenty of exchange requests! Rejections are a normal part of the process, so don’t get discouraged.
Flexibility is the secret
Searching by region instead of a specific city, being flexible with your dates, and mixing different types of exchanges can open up far more opportunities—and often lead to wonderful destinations you hadn’t even considered.
What makes it easier?
Many members say travelling solo or as a couple is often simpler than travelling as a family for this type of trip. And one thing came up again and again: after a while, searching for exchanges becomes a hobby in itself!
The bottom line? Long-term home exchanges are absolutely possible—with a bit of planning, plenty of flexibility, and a willingness to stay organised. Before you know it, the planning becomes part of the adventure. ![]()
