Is there implicit bias in cleaning standards? I believe there is.

I believe that when you do 2 hours of cleaning of your own home you will be happier with the results than when someone else does 4 hours of cleaning of that same home but you were not there to witness it. You cannot help but be biased towards finding the things they missed or did not do to your standard and you overlook the things they did to a higher standard than you would do them. You are looking for their errors and omissions but you DON’T do that with yourself when you clean. Humans blame others far faster than they blame themselves.

We know from peer-reviewed scientific studies repeated again and again that 80% of people think that they are more intelligent than average and that most drivers think they are better at driving than average. Humans are NOT objective judges. In fact we are terrible at it.

This is one of the reasons I don’t ask guests to clean my home. I ask them to flush the toilet take the rubbish out and walk away. Then I return and clean it. After all, if my friend or brother or even my mother-in-law comes to stay I do exactly the same thing and clean up after them. I don’t ask my friends and sleepovers to vacuum their bedroom carpet or descale the taps. Heck a lot of people don’t even make their own children clean the house.
