Exchanging in NYC

Hi, I’m organizing my 4 weeks summer travel in North America. No problems to exchange in Canada while I’m not finalizing 13 nights in NYC, even if more than 40 requests have been sent. Too long period? To early for summer holidays in NYC? Tks. Nicola

New York is the most requested city on HE, members there receive 10 requests per day. It’s very hard to find exchanges, especially with Airbnb banned and building rules ( some ban exchanging too). I suggest you extend your researches to suburbs : jersey city, Hoboken, long Island etc

Hi Etienne,
tks for the answer. I will try this way.

definitely look at the mass transit lines to plan your stay. Two weeks also may be too long.

Hi from NYC. 13 nights is a very long vacation period for New Yorkers. Try for shorter periods in different places.

@NYChost I’m not that sure, as we travelled 3 times to NYC, once for a whole month in Hoboken (technically New Jersey but really close with the Path), another for 23 days in Manhattan and next September we will stay 28 days in the Upper East Manhattan. We have always done reciprocal home swaps, as most families from NYC live in small flats that cannot host many people and, as a result, they get a low GP rate, so it’s not interesting for them to swap their flats for GPoints.

Welcome to the Forum and thanks for the insider tips!

But where is your home? I am guessing that the reason for your success at finding swaps in NYC is not because you focus on long-term reciprocal swaps, but is actually because your home is in a highly desirable location for New Yorkers. New York (along with Paris, London, Edinburgh, and a few others) are in such extremely high demand, that members in those locations have the luxury of choosing wherever and whenever they want to travel. It’s the simple law of supply and demand
Those of us in less-popular tourist areas rarely can find swaps in those places no matter how long we offer, what type of exchange, or what time of year.

,@CapBimet I live in Spain, in a city near Barcelona, I tend to be proactive when looking for a home swap and read very carefully every ad, to make sure my proposal can fit with what the hosts are looking for. I always let them choose if they want GP or a reciprocal home swap and try to be as flexible as possible with the dates of our stay.

Simple, stay longer in Canada :maple_leaf:  !

We once swapped home and cars with a family from Montreal for a month during the summer and we loved your country and its beautiful landscapes.
