Hi is anyone else in the UK finding it difficult to obtain car insurance for their European guests? We have never had a problem before and for a small cost we were able to add French, Spanish and Danish visitors to our car insurance. Our current car insurance (AA) is due to expire and as they categorically do not offer non residents temporary cover we thought we would take the hit and take out insurance with another insurer early. However I spent all day trying different insurers to no avail. Direct Line said they might but only once I take out their insurance will they check with their underwriters. I am reluctant to take this risk as they are much more expensive than other insurance.
Is anyone experiencing this as a new problem and how did you deal with it? We have found one quote for standalone insurance for 1 driver 2 weeks with Sterling which is £290 for someone with a clean driving licence and 20 years driving which seems excessive. I see Cuvva recommended a lot but the person has to be present in the UK and take live photos with the car. Not really what you want to do when you have just arrived at midnight. Plus there is a risk they won’t insure or be even more expensive.
Any helpful thoughts welcome.
Thanks in advance
Maggie
