Why and how you should organize a reciprocal exchange

Let’s talk about reciprocal exchanges! On HomeExchange, you’ve got two ways to set up an exchange:

  • Reciprocal exchange – You stay at my place, I stay at yours (it can be at the same time or not).
  • Non-reciprocal exchange – You stay with someone using GuestPoints.

Most exchanges on the platform are non-reciprocal, simply because they’re super convenient.

But here’s the thing: reciprocal exchanges are still a favorite among many members—especially when they’re simultaneous. There’s something really special about swapping homes at the same time. It’s like stepping into each other’s lives for a bit. And who knows? You might even meet up with your exchange partner before or after and end up making a new friend. (This can happen with non-reciprocal exchanges too, of course!)

How do you organize a reciprocal exchange?

1. Set your dates in orange (or green) on your calendar

When setting up your calendar, you’ll notice three color options:

  • Use orange for dates when your home is available only for reciprocal exchanges.
  • Use green if you’re open to all types of exchanges (reciprocal or non-reciprocal).

By marking your calendar, you’ll help other members know when and how your home is available!

2. Search for a reciprocal exchange

Start by entering your destination, dates, and number of guests in the search bar. Then, refine your results by selecting:

  • “Reciprocal exchange”, or
  • “Open to all types of exchange” if you’re flexible.

From there, browse the listings, read their profiles, and reach out to the members you’re interested in connecting with.

Pro Tip: Try a reverse search to find members who want to visit your area!

How to do a reverse search

Reverse search is a nifty way to see all the members who’ve added your town to their list of favorite destinations. Here’s how to do it:

  1. Start a new search like you normally would—destination, dates, number of guests, etc.
  2. On the results page, click the “Reverse search”* button.
  3. Enter your city or country, click “Apply,” and voilà! You’ll see members looking for an exchange in your area.

You can find more information about the reverse search here: Info on reverse search: https://help.homeexchange.com/hc/en-us/articles/360000730557-What-is-reverse-search-and-how-do-I-use-it-

Now, all that’s left is to explore their profiles and reach out to the ones you’d like to swap homes with. Happy exchanging!
