Home Exchange Tips – Avoiding Common Misunderstandings

Hi everyone, I’ve been using HomeExchange for a while and I’m curious how others handle situations where expectations don’t fully match reality.

Sometimes listings look perfect online, but small details like cleanliness, amenities, or communication style can feel different once you arrive. I’d like to hear how experienced members manage these situations, and what’s considered the best way to give feedback without creating conflict.

Also interested in any practical tips for spotting potential issues early before confirming an exchange.

Hi TMKC

I don’t care about small glitches.
Homes are generously opened to welcome you for free.
This is not a profesional rental.

It’s quite common to have something not working easily or properly.
It has been impossible to me to watch on a so called smart TV overseas as the one button remote control is not intuitive or a jacuzzi was not working when we were there.

However, if a bedroom does not exist even though it is listed in the listing (unfortunatly it is a common lie - the 2nd bedroom is a sofa bed in the living room) then the best thing to do is to ask before the agreement if the second bedroom exists as there is no photo or/and to tell it on a neutral tone in the comment.

Agreed! I think posting pictures of every bedroom, bed, bathroom, bathtub, and shower space are essential. There are too many nuances in the different languages for everyone to understand the differences in bedrooms, guestrooms, powder rooms, king beds, california king beds, offices, etc. etc. Some things are lost in translation so the more pictures the better. A listing lacking pictures often feels suspicious to me.
