First time home exchangers, ideally we want to do reciprocal stays but not many are interested in coming to Australia from Portugal, is it the distance? Also interested in guest points. Would love to know.

Yes… mainly the distance, and the price of flights. 
Coincidentally, we’ve just had a couple from the Gold Coast staying in our house with guestpoints. I believe they stocked on lots of guestpoints at home throughout the year, in order to spend 2.5 months traveling in Europe. It seems to have worked well for them!
