In 2024, we once again measured the carbon footprint generated by HomeExchange and by the travels of our community.
Result: 866,000 tCOโe emitted (+32% vs 2023), but an increase thatโs slower than our activity growth (+41% more exchanges).
A few key figures:
-
Nearly 80% of emissions come from travel (especially by car and plane
).
-
Long-haul trips decreased slightly (-1 point), which helped limit the increase per exchange.
Key takeaways:
-
A minority of trips (long-haul, often by plane) account for a very large share of our footprint. Even a small drop in these trips has a strong impact on results.
-
Frequency also matters: 26% of members take more than 4 exchanges per year, generating more than half of the communityโs emissions.
Possible solutions?
-
Travel less oftenโฆ but stay longer!
-
Choose low-impact transport (carpooling, train, bus, bike
).
-
Travel shorter distances, and spread out long-haul trips as much as possible.
