๐ŸŒ Our 2024 Carbon Footprint Report Is Out!

In 2024, we once again measured the carbon footprint generated by HomeExchange and by the travels of our community.

:backhand_index_pointing_right: Result: 866,000 tCOโ‚‚e emitted (+32% vs 2023), but an increase thatโ€™s slower than our activity growth (+41% more exchanges).

:key: A few key figures:

  • Nearly 80% of emissions come from travel (especially by car and plane :automobile::airplane:).

  • Long-haul trips decreased slightly (-1 point), which helped limit the increase per exchange.

:light_bulb: Key takeaways:

  • A minority of trips (long-haul, often by plane) account for a very large share of our footprint. Even a small drop in these trips has a strong impact on results.

  • Frequency also matters: 26% of members take more than 4 exchanges per year, generating more than half of the communityโ€™s emissions.

Possible solutions?

  • Travel less oftenโ€ฆ but stay longer!

  • Choose low-impact transport (carpooling, train, bus, bike :slightly_smiling_face:).

  • Travel shorter distances, and spread out long-haul trips as much as possible.
