Night train travel with the family: our practical tips!

:tram: Thinking of taking a night train with your family? Great idea! It’s an eco-friendly, comfortable and practical way to cover long distances while you sleep. But to make your family rail adventure a success, it’s best to plan ahead.

Here are some useful tips for traveling with children. :backhand_index_pointing_down: Feel free to share your own in the comments!

1. Choose the right route and schedule

Pick a trip that’s not too long or too short, so everyone can get a proper rest. Avoid very late departures or early arrivals, especially if it’s your children’s first time on a night train.

2. Book early and choose comfort

A private compartment (4 or 6 beds) is ideal: it’s more comfortable, quieter, and less stressful if a child cries. Booking early gives you more options and often better prices. Don’t forget to check out family offers from various train companies!

3. Ensure safety and peace of mind

Compartments can be locked from the inside, which is reassuring for families. Keep your valuables in a small bag with you (ID, tickets, phone etc), and show older kids where the toilets are and how to call for help if needed.

4. Pack a small night bag

No need to open all the suitcases! Bring a small, handy bag with nighttime essentials: pajamas, comfort items, toothbrushes, wipes, a bottle of water, a book or quiet game… Everything else can stay stored away.

5. Bring snacks

Depending on the train, there may or may not be a food service. In any case, pack some simple snacks for your kids to enjoy: cookies, cereal bars, fruit… And don’t forget a water bottle for each person to avoid night-time “I’m thirsty!” moments.

6. Help them fall asleep

Sleeping on a train is a new experience. A bedtime routine helps: try stories, lullabies and dimmed lights. The steady sound of the train often helps, but a sleep mask or earplugs can be useful too.

What about you?

Have you ever taken a night train with kids? Any struggles, tips or sweet memories?

Thanks for the great information. I have been thinking about something along these lines.
Any suggestions in Europe say between Barcelona and Dieppe?

I’m Spanish and, as far as I know, there haven’t been any night trains in Spain since 2020.

Thank you

This sounds like so much fun! Unfortunately we don’t have many night trains in the UK, I think London to Scotland might be the only one. My kids would love it though, so i’ll definitely look into this for mainland Europe.
