Leaving exchange early

What happens when you need to move an exchange early- for example if you were unwell and had to go home? What if you had pets that were being cared for on the exchange? Thanks!

Agreeing to an exchange where there is pet care involved is a really serious engagement. It would be really important to communicate with the host to be sure that their pet was cared.

We once had staying someone at our home (with a cat) who discovered a few days in the exchange that he was allergic. The family contacted us and we discussed it. They then helped with finding a neighbour who could care for the animals for the remaining 10 days. And they themselves moved somewhere else for that time, as we were staying at their home. I think this was the best we all could do in this situation.

In fact, in my opinion, communication is there to solve all problems. A lot of things can happen during a trip (a cancelled train or plane, a barbecue going up in flames (it’s happened to us!), an illness… The most important thing is to “communicate”. By talking things over, we can always find solutions. I think and hope that people who choose to exchange are open-minded and therefore willing to listen and communicate.
In our case, we had to repaint the wall which was all black and if we had had to pay for the barbecue, it would have cost us less than the 2 magnificent weeks we spent if we had had to take an rbnb or a hotel. Something to think about!
