If you could give just one advice to a newbie

You will almost never have the same definition of what clean, hygienic or tidy means. You could spend your entire last day cleaning a home and some people would still seek out dirt.

My policy is simple. Flush the toilets, start the dishwasher, wipe down kitchen surfaces, lock the door and I will arrive and clean my home to my standard with as many hours as I wish to spend. That way at least one party is happy.

Its nearly impossible to clean a house perfectly in a foreign country with unfamiliar cleaning products whilst pressed for time on your last day of holiday. Walk away relaxed and spend the time with your own home cleaning with your products.

Or hirer a cleaner. In which case I will just flush the toilet and walk away, like I would from a hotel room.

I have no interest in trying to hit an impossible and loosely defined standard of cleanliness

Be kind, polite, and honest—and always thank members who reply to your request, even if it’s a “no.” Who knows, they might host you another time!
