Rustic, Jungle-Like Landscaping

The landscaping around our home has an Old Florida woodland feel, designed to embrace the untamed beauty of the natural surroundings. Towering palm trees sway in the breeze, while lush hibiscus, fragrant gardenia bushes, and vibrant bougainvillea add pops of color among the greenery.

Scattered throughout the property, you’ll find banana trees, lemon, orange and lime trees, bringing both beauty and fresh fruit to the space. Walking through the outdoor areas feels like stepping into a wild, jungle-like retreat, where nature takes the lead and every corner offers a new sense of tranquility.

What you will love about this home

Our cozy home is in a wonderful walkable, bikeable area close to shopping, dining, parks and more. There’s one bedroom on the main floor and another upstairs in the finished attic, with carpeting and its own heating/cooling system. The main floor bedroom has a queen bed, dresser and closet. The attic/second bedroom has a queen bed, sleeper sofa, dresser and closet. A third bedroom is set up as a music room/office, with a Yahama upright piano, a Yamaha electric keyboard, a sit/stand desk, and a couch that opens into a bed.

The kitchen has all the appliances and tools you’ll need, with a small table that seats two and looks out onto the front yard (and the very active hummingbird feeder). There’s also a larger dining table in the adjacent dining room that seats six comfortably, and up to eight with an extra leaf.

We have only one bathroom, but it was recently updated to include a brand new shower/bath, sink/vanity/cabinet, flooring, toilet, mirror and lighting.

There’s a washer/dryer, a second freezer and a universal gym machine in the unfinished half of the basement, and a treadmill with computer desk, rowing machine, small stair stepper, weight bench with free weights, and a TV and couch in the finished part of the basement.

The front and back yards are certified as a “backyard habitat” (low-maintenance native gardens; no lawn; lots of birds!), with a deck in front and a covered patio with a propane grill and table/chairs in back.

The main TV is in the living room with Netflix, Hulu, Prime and other streaming services, plus broadcast TV using an antenna. We also have a good selection of board games, DVDs and DVD player, books, and a ridiculous number of jigsaw puzzles. There’s a working fireplace in the living room, and seating for four or five with a couch, easy chair and rocker.

The garage likely won’t be usable as we leave at least one car there when we travel, but you will have space in the driveway to park a car behind the gate. There’s also a ping pong table in the garage that can be set up on a concrete pad in the backyard.

This is our primary residence, so it definitely has a “lived-in” feel about it. As you can tell from the photos, if you’re looking for a completely uncluttered, sterile, vacation rental feel, this is probably not the best exchange for you.

We have no pets, but your well-behaved pets are welcome. We have a fully fenced backyard and a great neighborhood for walking.

What you will love about this neighborhood

We live in a quiet neighborhood with very little traffic on our street. Our neighbors will respect your privacy but are also welcoming and friendly and would be happy to help if you need anything. We are within easy walking distance (about 1 mile) of two large parks – Laurelhurst, with a pond, large play area, pickleball and tennis courts, a small skatepark, a diverse array of trees, and concerts, plays and other activities in the summer; and Mt. Tabor, a forest-like extinct volcano and the first “Urban Quiet Park” in the U.S. – and there’s an elementary school about half a mile away with a large playing field and playground.

Nature lovers will be amazed by the glorious hikes within easy driving distance of our home: It’s about 20-30 minutes to the Columbia River Gorge, known for its spectacular views, hiking, rivers and waterfalls; and both Forest Park (the largest urban forest in the U.S.) and Washington Park are about 20 minutes away. Forest and Washington Parks are connected by miles of trails, and Washington Park also features an arboretum, world-class Japanese garden, international rose test garden, the Oregon Zoo, Pittock Mansion and more. About an hour south, you’ll find Silver Falls State Park and its 7-mile “Trail of Ten Falls,” quite possibly the most magnificent moderately easy hike you’ll ever experience.

We’re also close to several shopping/dining areas and two bus lines that go directly downtown. It’s about a 10-minute drive to downtown Portland; less than two hours to the Oregon coast; and about three hours to Seattle.

Additional information

Because of the number of beds, Home Exchange calculated that our home sleeps six, but we have only one bathroom, so I would say a more realistic maximum would be four, or possibly five if you have small children. (We actually have two double sleeper sofas and a sleeper chair, but I only entered one on our profile to keep the suggested number of guests calculated by Home Exchange down.) If you’re unsure if your family would be comfortable here, please reach out and I can give you more information.

Travelling in the Netherlands
The best way to travel for you is by car. For short distances you can use our bicycles. Beware of cyclists, they are everywhere and often have no lights at night.
There are regular trains from Gouda station, but they are quite expensive. Parking is very expensive in the Netherlands, especially in Amsterdam and Utrecht, but still cheaper than traveling by train with 2 or more people. In Amsterdam, park your car in P+R RAI and take metro line 52 (direction Noord) and get off at Rokin or Central Station. If you return to the P&R by subway, the parking fee is only €1,-. travel with a public transport card that you can buy in the parking garage. The others can use a pin.

Cycling:
In the Netherlands, we have a system that allows you to cycle from one numbered junction to another, called ‘junctions’. You see them on most maps. There is also a phone app called ‘bicycle route network’.
Note: In the Netherlands, you cycle on the road or on a special cycle path. It is forbidden to ride in pedestrian areas or on the sidewalk.
We do not recommend cycling in Amsterdam or Utrecht! Try Reeuwijk and Gouda first!

Cycling:
Around the Reeuwijkse Plassen: to Hekendorp and then on to Haastrecht.
Along the Vlist from Haastrecht to Schoonhoven.
Along the river Meije from Zwammerdam to Woerdense Verlaat.
On the Middelburgseweg, near Reeuwijk-Dorp, you can see a beautiful example of a polder. The land on one side of the road is about four meters below water level.

Strand:
All beaches are sandy. On a hot day at the weekend it will be busy. But beware of the undercurrent in the sea.

The Hague, Scheveningen: busy, but many restaurants on the beach. Take a look at the Kurhaus (just inside, it’s a hotel) and visit the Pier. Parking: Zwolseweg
Katwijk aan Zee, fishing village. Very nice.
Noordwijk aan Zee, nice but a tad chic.
Wassenaar-Wassenaarse Slag. Very simple beach, no promenade and only a few restaurants.

Must sees (things related to children are marked with C):
If you want to visit a museum, in some cases (especially in Amsterdam) you have to book in advance. There are a few things we think you should see when you’re here:

What you will love about this home

We are open to travelling throughout the year. If there is a time you would love to stay in our home but it does not show available on our calendar, please send us a message anyway and let us know your dates. If we can, we will make it work!

Our large home has recently been lovingly renovated and newly furnished. Our beautiful kitchen has an open concept with a huge island and top of the line Thermador appliances and plenty of seating. The kitchen is open to a cozy sitting area with a fireplace and sliders to a deck with a barbecue and a pool beyond that. In the summer you can take a vacation from your vacation lounging on the outdoor sectional on the pool patio.

The living room boasts a large cozy sectional with a large flat screen smart TV above another beautiful fireplace. It’s the perfect spot to curl up together and watch a good movie.

The bedrooms are also large. The master has a grand ensuite and a king size bed. The den/library/office has a comfortable fold out bed and it’s own ensuite. The other two queen rooms share an ensuite. One of the bedrooms also houses gym equipment.

What you will love about this neighborhood

We live on the North Shore of Vancouver, mountainside, within walking distance of Lynn Valley village with coffee shops, grocery stores, library and restaurants. Our neighbourhood is quiet and safe and our home is private, the last house at the top of our street.

We are:
*a short walk to mountain biking and hiking trails
*less than a 5 minute drive to Lynn Canyon Park and it’s FREE suspension bridge and all the popular local trails
*15 minutes to the beach
*15-20 minutes to 3 local ski hills
*20 minutes to downtown Vancouver (depending on traffic)
*1 hour and 40 minutes to Whistler.

We have the best of mountain and ocean outdoor living while still being close to the heart of the city.

While we are only enabled to choose two options from “close surroundings,” our location is unique in that we are walking distance to riverside trails, situated part way up the mountains, and only minutes to the ocean and the city. You can have it all and on the same day!

A fantastic destination in any season!

On a perfect summer day you will rise to beautiful mountain views, cook breakfast in a new gourmet kitchen and eat by the pool. After breakfast head out to Lynn Canyon Suspension Bridge and hiking trails, just a few minutes from the house. In the afternoon grab our inflatable SUPs and head to the beach, 15 minutes away, for a paddle. You can enjoy dinner and views at the Lower Lonsdale Shipyards just minutes from the house. Then return home for a nightcap at the poolside gas fire pit.

A perfect winter day might include skiing a local mountain in the morning, visiting Vancouver’s Aquarium in the afternoon, eating dinner out at one of Vancouver’s Michelin star restaurants then coming home to curl up for a movie in front of the fire.

Spring and fall are mild in Vancouver and can provide the perfect weather for hiking. Not too hot and not too cold. Vancouver is known for its beautiful cherry blossoms in the spring. And the leaves are gorgeous tones of red, yellow and orange in the fall. Paddling is possible on warm spring days and we often have Indian summers stretching well into October. Spring and fall are also great seasons to check out Vancouver’s galleries, museums, Stanley Park, Science World, the Aquarium and all the other local tourist destinations. I will share all my favourites with you when we host you.

Please note we have a $250CAD cleaning fee. This can be reduced to $200CAD for only two guests sharing one bed. It may be higher for more than four guests. Can be discussed.

We have felt extremely blessed to host our many large families in the past two years with plenty of room for multiple generations. We have helped reunite families, celebrate 60 years of wedlock, a 90th birthday, college graduations, work retreats, and even provided our house to an advertising agency to produce commercial media and print material. The response has been overwhelming and we sincerely thank you for considering our home.
