I think a small cleaning fee is okay when it’s not reciprocal and points. As I am leaving the home for them to use it and I’ll need to pay a housekeeper. If it’s reciprocal I charge nothing. It’s not to make money just the costs if I need to do a housekeeper and not me.

I think Home Exchange should guesstimate cleaning charges for areas(some are more expensive than others & harder to get).

They don’t want to get involved in cleaning fees and the issue is a 5 bedroom will have a higher cleaning fee than a 3 bedroom.

How big was the place?

It was a single level smallish home. 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, kitchen, dining room, lounge, no carpet.

…that’s fine but there still be a check box so that these listings can be filtered out whilst searching. Would also save un-necessary surprises (if there was a check box) as quite often, I have found that reference to a potential cleaning fee is not always obvious.

This should be regulated by H/E platform.

Hi well I am new to this forum as well as HE. Having said that we have had our first guest and have 4 more scheduled in the coming few months.
We have a full time helper that comes in M-F and cleans, makes beds, does laundry etc etc etc. you get looked after better than a 5 star hotel. We currently dont charge a fee though in our welcome note we ask that if you have been looked after please show your appreciation. The first person left nothing, I will see if the second one does. If not I will start asking for a token fee of about $20 as a tip to our helper.

I agree! We leave our home clean for the incoming H-E guest. The guest should leave it in the same condition. At most, the dirty laundry piled in the laundry area for you to wash.

So, why a fee? In my opinion this goes against the H-E ethos.

I never charge anything for cleaning and also never ask my guests to do any cleaning as I don’t like annoying guests with cleaning while they just should relax and enjoy,

as this is what I would like others hosts to do with me too when I’m traveling.

When I receive guests I do the cleaning or pay someone doing it, is just 5-10 euro per hour so it’s not that expensive.

But when I search for exchanges as a guests for Guests Points I see some people put exaggerated cleaning fees, 150 euro for a normal average house, when the real cost is no more than 30 euro. This should stop.

Look at this! Unbelievable. :exploding_head: 140 euro for cleaning that doesn’t include bed linens or towels, and Also a 15 euro per day for energy:exploding_head::exploding_head:

If you as a host pay for the cleaning for the guests, then when you go to other people’s houses they pay the cleaning for you then the total is always 0 and don’t stress each other with the cleaning, isn’t?

Well it’s already the cost of a rent the ā€œcleaning feesā€

Unbelievable! Please report this house. The HE team will look into it and contact the member to explain the rules.

I have recently noticed a marked increase in hosts charging cleaning fees
Worst was a before and after cleaning fee on an old house in the bush with no walls that prevented dust from entering.
I don’t charge so I have an expectation that others don’t charge or as has been suggested you end up down a rabbit hole
How many guests ? How many rooms ? How was the condition at the beginning of the stay ?

Yeah, it’s not nice to charge or to stress guests for cleaning, I never stress guests with the cleaning as I pay someone to do it and expect the same treatment when I’m hosted

Interesting comment Furkan, we won’t dwell on why it is primarily she who is relieved :joy: :joy: (it’s a joke …)

We all like our homes to be clean when we arrive. We also like our homes to be clean when our guests leave. Cleaning has a cost. The dilemma is: does the guest or the host pay for it? I think the host should always pay for it. In this way we are helping those who travel to enjoy their vacations more and spend their money on other things (museums, restaurants, etc.). When we are guests, the same thing will happen to us. Sometimes guests have time to clean, if a flight leaves very early they won’t have time, nor can we force guests to clean perfectly. This thinking is more similar to the Home Exchange philosophy. Let there be no money.
