What is Slow Travel — and How to Practice It with HomeExchange 🌿

In a world where travel is often measured by the number of countries checked off a list, slow travel offers a refreshing alternative. Instead of rushing from one attraction to the next, slow travel encourages you to immerse yourself in a place, connect with the local culture, and savour the experience at a gentler pace.

HomeExchange is a perfect way to embrace this style of travel. Staying in someone else’s home gives you space, comfort, and the feeling of living like a local, rather than just visiting. It allows you to settle in, explore neighbourhoods on foot, cook meals with local ingredients, and truly experience life as a resident, not a tourist.

How to practice slow travel during a home exchange:

  • Stay longer: Spend a week or two in the same home to see the rhythm of the community, discover hidden spots, and avoid the stress of constant packing and moving.

  • Explore like a local: Walk, cycle, or take public transport. Visit local markets, cafés, parks, and events rather than only the main tourist sights.

  • Cook at home: HomeExchange kitchens make it easy to prepare meals with fresh, local ingredients. It’s cheaper, sustainable, and helps you feel part of the neighbourhood.

  • Take your time outdoors: Slow travel isn’t just about sightseeing; it’s about experiencing nature, strolling through streets, or relaxing in your host’s garden.

By slowing down, you not only reduce your environmental impact but also gain a richer, more meaningful travel experience. You notice details, connect with local people, and come home with memories — not just photos.

We’d love to hear from you:
How do you incorporate slow travel into your home exchanges? Do you prefer longer stays, local activities, or simply enjoying the comfort of a home away from home?

We always slow travel, try to go to just one place for three weeks. The only reason that we sometimes go somewhere one or two weeks is that we cannot find enough other members who want to swap that long with us!
We always hike in nature, like mountains, waterfalls, rocks etc. and we like old buildings such as medieval cities end castles.
Last summer, we bought fresh cow milk at a local farmer.
