I am a full-time wheelchair user. It is very difficult finding homes that are actually wheelchair accessible. I can scroll through hundreds of listings that have been ticked off as being wheelchair accessible, but are not. I would like it if more detail could be included in the search criteria. ie wheel-in shower

Hi Marilyn, it was great to see your post. My house is wheelchair friendly and we have recently installed a lift, which takes my fold up wheelchair without problems. You can roll in then roll right on out when it reaches the first floor. I also have a bathroom set up for someone with a disability.
Our house is mostly open plan so doors and so forth are not a problem. Our home is is #2381320

It is important to consider a shower access when users use the wheelchair symbol - it is of no use if one can get into a house in a wheelchair but then find that they cannot wash/bathe as the home only has a bath and not an accessible shower. Please consider this. Thank you.

Hi,

I agree with this! Although we have an “accessible” listing, there are a few elements of our accommodation that I know may pose some difficulties depending on the individual’s needs (mostly relating to parking of an accessible vehicle and kitchen setup).

It would be good to see some kind of prompt checklist for Hosts and a separate disability-friendly rating system for Guests (ie seperate to the host/home rating that appears on the profile but help identify the level of accessibility relating to wheelchair use or ambulant access - - referring not only to access within the house but also general community facilities.

In the meantime I request our guests ask for more detail if they have specific access needs - although my advice is just based on my working background (occupational therapy) and not lived experience. We are keen for feedback from our guests regarding how the space ca be improved.

Hello, Your home is stunning! It proves that a home can be wheelchair accessible and tastefully decorated.

I think this could be solved by stating that to be considered WC accessible there must be a WC accessible shower. And a lesser category for those that don’t include that facility.

Hi again … firstly if I am not doing my searches correctly I would appreciate advice. please take notice of the fact that the wheelchair symbol used does not mean that whilst someone with reduced mobillty may be able to access a home they may not be able to wash when there as there is often only a shower over a bath. On the site there is a symbol for bath but none for a stand alone shower!!! Please amend this.
Whilst I applaud your attempts to become more disability friendly I would suggest a shower is a basic facility if a member is going to use the wheelchair symbol. Otherwise you really are missing the point!
I have requested this on a number of occasions but don’t see any progress. I have just spent 3 hours searching for an exchange using the filters wheelchair friendly and elevator only to find that a significant number have a shower over a bath. Very frustrating.

I totally agree. I spend at least a few hours a week searching for a home that would even somewhat suit my needs. My biggest frustration is when a home is listed as being accessible but the washroom is upstairs! I ask people (politely) to compare it to doing a search for a beachfront property and having to open dozens of links only to find you have to drive to the beach.

What is your listing number? I’d be happy to look at your photos and give my opinion as a full time wheelchair user.

What is your HE number? I always start with the wheelchair icon in the groups to join of interest. Not a lot of help, but it is a start. Many years ago I belonged to a site that had only wheelchair accessible homes. Maybe HE could start a new site for this.

Have you seen this home in Vancouver? We stayed there this year. It was absolutely beautiful and 100% accessible.
